1. INTRODUCTION.
The subject matter of the presented project: continuous fibers production from uni component natural raw material - basalt rock stone (According patent of State of Israel) and its further processing to many application finished products.
2. PRODUCT DEFINITION.
The main product is a natural, inorganic fibrous material in industrial textile form (strands, yarns, inorganic weaved and knitted fabric, etc.), based on man-made fibers from basalt rock mineral. It is targeted for the protective clothing market, fire-resistant upholstery, wall covering applications, reinforcement materials market in specialty thermoplastic and thermo set resin applications, etc. In these and other applications it competes with cost and technical effectively to substitute currently used glass fibers, and some others (like steel, kevlar etc. fibers).
Basalt fiber based applications are suitable to fill the gap between glass fiber and ceramic, carbon, etc. fibers which are much more expensive then other fibers based goods.
3. RELATIVE TECHNICAL ADVANTAGES OF BASALT FIBERS.
The specialty continuous fibers derived from basalt rock have proven technical characteristics, performance specification and apparent superior cost-effective advantages in comparison with the commonly used glass and other fibers.
The main technical advantages are:
· High chemical resistance, to concentrated acids, corrosives and other active elements.
· High thermal resistance (thermo stability) and low flammability.
· Low degradation of strength at temperatures as high as 700-900 deg. C., and high humidity.
· High thermal and acoustic insulation properties.
· Excellent adhesion to polymer resins and rubbers.
· Relatively high mechanical strength, abrasion resistance and elasticity;
· High dielectric properties.
· Low water absorption.
· Ecologically clean and non-toxic.
4. MAIN APPLICATIONS.
High basalt fiber’s physical-mechanical properties stipulate its introduction into production of wide range of new high efficient structural and technical composite materials, which can replace, metal, timber, plastic materials etc.
The following list represents some of main groups of products, based on continuous basalt fibers, (experienced in research and manufacturing):
Soft body armor (ballistic protection);
Heat, flame, chemical and abrasion resistant clothing;
Incombustible containers for shells, rockets and other military hardware;
Carpet and upholstery manufacturing for military & civilian use (tanks, ships, aircraft, home products, etc.)
Foil clad basalt based laminates;
Reinforced break pads and disks;
High and low temperature heat insulation and sound proofing for aircraft, ships, refrigerators and other compound technique;
Paint aggregates for heat and corrosion protection;
Light honeycombed construction for radar, panels etc, based on basalt knitted fabric;
Reinforced rods for concrete; different industrial filters, nets for landscaping, rock fall protection etc, etc.
Reinforced thermoplastics for tubes, container casing, lining, bodies, blades, etc.
5. CAPITAL INVESTMENT IN PILOT PLANT.
A continuous-process pilot plant will be set-up at the outset of the venture, designed for a steady-state production rate of 100 kg/Hr (or appr.300 TPY). The estimated total fixed capital investment in the pilot plant, scheduled to be operable within 9-12 months from initial design, is app. $1 million.
6. RETURN ON INVESTMENT.
It is expected that the pilot facility will be able to produce up to 250 TPY during first operating year and 300 TPY- during second one. The producer will be able to derive an income from the material supplied to the Beta sites, based on the targeted weighted average price, or approximately 5 $/Kg. This income will be able to return all capital investment during 4 years and to cover the operating cost in 2 years.
It is expected also that there will be a net profit already in the second operating year.
P.S. The initiators of this project have knowledge and practical experience in R&D, designing and manufacturing in this field from the very beginning technology.
